Not a good day so far

Today we are celebrating our one year wedding anniversary (it's actually the 29th). I had a cast-on class this morning (which DH knew about for at least a week and I left it early because I got very dizzy). Last week we made plans to go to the IMAX theatre in Tulsa to watch nature under the sea after my class. DH has been grumpy since we left, so I asked him what the problem was. He said he had a whole day planned out for us, starting at 9am. So, I'm either a terrible wife for going to the class or he's an ass for never saying a word about morning plans and for making me cry. We're at the theatre now, but I just want to go home. It's been a craptastic anniversary so far.

Aright, I'm in a better mood now.

Doing an experiment and having it work will usually improve one's mood. I repeated  yesterday's experiment with real samples, and it worked. I did samples that had been done previously to see if I got the same results. The results are identical, even with a kit that's been expired for 4 months. Go me!

Oh, and FYI: Yesterday, my protocol said I had to use sodium hypochlorite in a vacuum flask to dispose of the waste. I looked through all of the chemicals in the lab, and didn't find it. I was worried that I might not be able to do my experiment because I couldn't properly dispose of the waste. After searching the websites of chemical companies, I was only getting more confused. One of my nice co-workers decided to use wikipedia to find synonyms for the name. Wanna know what it is? Bleach. Sodium hypochlorite=bleach. I lol'd at myself.

holy crap its been almost a week

since my last post. Oh well. I started a new post last night, but I couldn't formulate the words to say what I wanted to (although I can in my head while I'm trying to go to sleep or driving-both times where I can't post).

Anyway, today was a good day. I started an experiment that a former lab manager had screwed up royally over the summer. I was only allowed to do a test strip because a) the kits expired in Oct and b) the bosses wanted me to prove that I am capable. The control strip worked beautifully and now I have to design an experiment repeating samples done when the lab was in MN to see if I get the same results. I'm happy to be working at the bench again, but I'm wary of the asshat. He told me that I did a really good job today, but he's known to flip-flop on that attitude quickly and almost without warning. So, we'll see how long I stay in his favor this time.

On the knitting front, I finished the bumblebee hat, and its the right size.

I got cable

Last week, I got cable. We were concerned that we would lose all source of entertainment with the digital switchover (that didn't happen btw), so we got cable. I already have a few favorite channels: TLC (all those darn baby shows), Animal Planet (all those darn cute animals), MSNBC (I love lockup and cops), etc etc. Wanna know what my favorite channel is? TV land. It makes me all nostalgic. When I was a kid at my nana's house, I would watch TV land. I loved the Andy Griffith Show, I Dream of Genie, and Mr, Ed. I'm not sure if these shows were on TV land or on regular TV, but I love these too: Little House on the Prairie, Murder She Wrote, and Matlock. Oh, and Inspector Gadget! I would sit on my couch with my grandpa and watch it. He was a doctor, but he always took time out of his busy schedule to watch that show with me every day. Sigh, I miss those days.

Finished a baby hat!

I made a newborn bumble bee hat with Berroco Comfort yarn. I had intended to give it to a former co-worker (due in March), but the hat is too small for a newborn. Luckily, I have a friend whose cousin recently gave birth at 30 weeks. So, I'm going to give it to her, and make another one with bigger needles.

I have 2 tattoos...

I don't think I've ever AW'd my other tattoo. In fact, when I had DH take a picture of it yesterday, I can honestly say I haven't seen it in at least a year. Its kinda hard to see your back, kwim? Anyway, someone had asked me what it looked like, so here's the other one:

Ahem.....

WE ARE DONE ALIQUOTING!!!!! holy fucking shit damn OMG I'm deliriously happy the nightmare is over OMG yay!

I'm going to go have a mental breakdown now, be back later.

Sunday, February 15, 2009

I think my tattoo is going to need touching up. I know he put white in it, and I can't see it at all. There are a few spots that look like they're raw. I know its going to scab, and that they will come off. I just hope there's color underneath them. I don't remember having this much trouble with my tramp stamp. Maybe its the location? I'm trying not to freak out any more, just to let it heal and see what it looks like afterwards. Sigh. At least it doesn't really hurt anymore; its starting to get itchy now.

We have a 3 day weekend because of President's day, but because of that stupid pipetting experiment, I worked yesterday and will work tomorrow. I get next Friday off because of working yesterday-I don't know if they'll give me another day off because I'm working tomorrow. I doubt it-they'll probably just have me add it to my extra hours worked spreadsheet and I'll take it off some other time. We're supposed to ship off the samples Tuesday and this nightmare will finally be over.

A tad bit swelled...

Now that my panic over the potential damage to my tattoo has passed, I would like to point out something a tad bit entertaining/interesting. Do my feet look different to you lol? I simply can't imagine why one would be bigger than the other....oh wait. It might be because I stabbed one of them a million times with a needle. Just in case you can't tell, my normal foot is the one on the right lol. Keep in mind it the fat one is still smaller than it was last night.

Not sure

I'm worried that I may have damaged my tattoo. Its oozing ink, and some of the lines are not as clean as they were before. Its very gooey. My co-workers think its ok, but I probably won't be convinced until it heals lol. I called the tattoo shop and they said to put breathable non-stick gauze over it while I'm at work, and then to let it breathe when I get home. She said its probably ok. If it doesn't look better tomorrow, I'm going to go to the tattoo shop and show it to them and see what they say. I really really don't want to have to have it touched up. I've passed my pain threshold for the next few months lol.

Taa-daaaa!

Um, so I got a tattoo tonight...

Yup. I got a tattoo on the top of my foot tonight. Its a blue ball of yarn with 2 knitting needles sticking out. It hurts like a sonofabitch lol. I am quite proud to say that I did not cry during the entire thing, although I had a death grip on the chair. The tattoo guy was incredibly nice too. If you live in OKC, go to Mystical Illusions and ask for Bobby. He's great.

I can't take the bandage off for another 30 minutes or so, but I'll take a pic when I do and post it. :)

The socks saga

So I've been knitting ankle socks with sock yarn. This is my first time to ever knit with sock yarn. Here is what I have so far:

Now here's the bad part. Here's the other side of the sock:
You see that gap in the stitches? Its a bad thing. It means something is wrong with either the way I picked up the instep stitches or with the heel flap itself, or both. I was going to frog (rip out) until I got back past the heel flap, but I think I might have to frog the whole thing. I'm not very good at frogging-I never get the stitches back on the needles in the right direction. So, goodbye dear sock. I'll recreate you, I promise.

Friday, January 30, 2009

Whew!

Work was crazy today, and its not going to get any better in the next 2 weeks. We have to aliquot over 4000 samples! Yay! Its all I'll be doing actually, and I predict late days and a weekend working in my future.

I'm sleepy, and am contemplating going to sleep rather soon. :)

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Ick

I have another headache. I'm surprise I can even read to type this. I'm going to take 2 tylenol and head to bed. I actually have to go to work tomorrow.

And then there were 2...

I finished the second sock! Now I am going to use the deliciously beautiful sock yarn I bought to make another pair! :) I think I've found a new love-my hoodie may be in trouble lol.

Newsflash

THIS JUST IN:

I AM OFFICIALLY ADDICTED TO GOSSIP GIRL.

NFT. XOXO.

lol.

Monday, January 26, 2009

Hope no one minds...

I've been changing my background with my mood. :)

Sunday, January 25, 2009

One more thing...

I'm over halfway done with the second sock. I can't wait to start all over with the beautiful sock yarn I bought. :)

Finished my first sock!

Ta-daa!

On to sock #2!

My knitting

I've realized that I don't AW my knitting on here near as much as I should lol. So, here ya go:

My So-Called Scarf:

The back of my hoodie (I've also finished the left front):

Grey K3 P3 scarf:
Other things in progress that I don't yet have pics for:

a pair of variegated blue ankle socks (berroco comfort)
a hobo bag that may never get finished (lion brand wool something or other)
a green cabled scarf (berroco foliage)

Friday, January 23, 2009

Great way to start a Friday

There's nothing quite like an ass-ripping from my bosses due to a coworkers mistake to start the day off right. I was told our "cavalier" attitude regarding samples has to stop and if we don't like our jobs we can quit. I'm tempted to take them up on that.

Inauguration day

Today is a very emotional and historic day. I don't really know how to enunciate exactly what I'm feeling, so please forgive me if I'm a little rough around the edges (we'll blame this on my chart). I'm excited about the dawn of a new era for the US. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that, although Bush certainly screwed up a lot of things, I think he was a good President. I voted for him, and I'm proud of that. But our nation needs Obama. Its evident when looking at all of the excitement and hope displayed by the ~2 million people in Washington this morning. I sincerely hope he can live up to most of the expectations and that he can turn our country around. I'm glad that someday I'll be able to say to my future kids that I remember this day, just like my mom can tell me she remembers MLK's march and other historic events.

In a later post, I'll show you why I'm so emotional. Its pretty freaking awesome actually (but not a BFP, so don't freak).

Oh, and Placerville, Ca? Did ya miss the last post? Guess so.

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Who's reading from Placervile, Ca?

I should probably know, but I've already ruled out those who I know live in Ca. I'm curious to know who you are. Please leave me a comment or send me an email if you have the address.

BTW, its been brought to my attention that my live traffic feed doesn't always pick the exact right location. So, if you are reading from the vicinity of Placerville, Ca, I'm talking to you! :)

I have a 2 income family!

DH starts a job with a transport ambulance service tomorrow! After tomorrow, he'll work 12hr shifts (7-7) on Monday-Thursday, and will be off on Friday-Sunday. Yay for free weekends! He'll get paid $10/hr. Can ya tell I'm excited? After being together nearly 6 years, this the the first non-work study job he's had. I'm really happy.

Friday, January 9, 2009

Good lord I just want to go to sleep!

Its 3pm on Friday, and all I want to do is go home and sleep! Unfortunately, I still have 2 hours of work and we have no food at home, so I have to go grocery shopping or DH will starve lol. I guess I better get to chugging the mtn dew so that I stay awake until 5!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........................

Thursday, January 8, 2009

Ok, so DH's life was spared.

He called me around 4 and told me that the girl couldn't take her test because she had a copy of her birth certificate instead of the original. So I didn't have to strangle him. I did make it clear that I am not ok with her driving my car; he said she wouldn't ask again because she doesn't want to ask us twice to borrow our car.

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Must.resist.urge.to.strangle.DH!!!!

DH just called me. Apparently, he decided to let a classmate from his EMT class use our Cavalier for her driving license test. The problem is, he didn't bother to tell me about it until he dropped her and the car off. He called to ask if we had full coverage on the car, and that's how I found out about it. We do, but I don't think it will cover us if she hits something!!! Its a good thing he did this with the Cavalier and not the new Malibu; otherwise, my head would be rotating and I'd probably be in jail. Will anyone visit me?

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Yay!

DH passed his EMT-basic test!

Monday, January 5, 2009

Not too bad so far

Despite my blahness last night (which I think can be directly attributed to a very busy weekend that included 10+ hours of driving time), 2009 seems to be shaping up to be fairly decent so far. Granted, it is only the 5th, and therefore Murphy's law could still attack lol. I've reconnected with a family member, and that makes me happy. I must have contracted the knitting disease startitis because I've started 4 scarves in the past week (none finished and one was aggressively frogged). I've made very good progress on my knitted hoodie (Central Park Hoodie pattern); I might post some pics tonight when I get home. I'm almost through with the back part. Not bad for only being a knitter for 2 months, huh? I must have a crafty gene lol.

DH has his national registry EMT-basic test tomorrow. He's taken several practice tests and quizzes, and has done fairly well on them. I know he can pass that test, its just a matter of him figuring out how to deal with test anxiety. I think he said he'll get his results within 2 days of taking the test, so I should know by Thursday if I am married to an EMT. He ultimately wants to work in an ER rather than in an ambulance, so he technically only has 1 more semester of classes to meet the ER qualifications of being an EMT-Intermediate. If all goes well, he'll probably do that class in the fall.

As for me, I'm still on the fence about going back to school. I just don't know if genetic counseling is what I want to do. I joke that if the lab tech thing doesn't work out and if I don't get accepted to a master's program, I could always just sell drugs (JUST KIDDING for any authorities who may be reading this). I kinda live in the ghetto part of OKC, so it would fit in well with my neighbors lol.

Well, for today and tomorrow at least, I am still in the fun lab. I am learning a new protocol, and therefore have to work in a different lab than my normal one. They are so much more laid-back here and friendly; I feel like I am in heaven. (Shhhhh....I even knit during the waiting periods of the protocol and they don't care!). Its great.

Sunday, January 4, 2009

What's wrong with me tonight?

I feel so blah. My BFF just went home after spending the weekend in the city with me. I don't want to do anything. I tried playing on my fav websites, but even that just seems blah too (no offense). I think maybe I should just go to sleep. I had grand plans for DH tonight, but that doesn't sound like fun tonight either. WTF?

Wanna see another sad puppy face?

Sadie came into heat today, and we didn't have a doggie diaper. So, I improvised. She is not impressed with the outcome.

Helping out a friend

I have a friend who is trying to raise money for IVF or adoption. She and her husband are also in the process of becoming foster parents. She makes beautiful handmade necklaces, purses, and diaper bags, and has an etsy shop set up to help her raise the funds. Adoption and IVF are not cheap, so please check out her etsy store and help her out! They just want to provide a loving home for a child! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll post the link below and also in the sidebar on my blog. Thanks!

My last post of 2008

I can hardly believe that 2008 is almost over. This was a fairly good year-I got married, got a small inheritance left to me by my grandfather, and started my life as a lab tech (rather than a student). I have high hopes for next year: I'd like to have a baby in 2009. I'd like to survive another year in my job (and hopefully outlast a few co-irkers). It'd be really nice if DH got an EMT job-he is taking the national registry test next Tuesday. He's not a good test taker despite knowing the material, so I have everything crossable crossed that he passes. I'd like to knit a whole lot more, and I have specific goals in that dept:
  • Finish my central park hoodie without mangling it more than what's been done
  • Learn to knit socks
  • Possibly start making DPN-holders
  • Maybe open an etsy store? I gotta pay for my yarn habit somehow lol.
  • Start making baby stuff

I've been trying to convince DH that we need to make some kind of life plan, and even if we don't adhere to it, a general plan would be great. Here are some of the things I'd like to map out:

  • We're already TTC, but I'd like to have a goal in place for kids, spacing between them, etc.
  • We need to buy a house
  • We want to move somewhere that has snow in the winter (I'm thinking PA or CO, he's thinking Alaska lol. I better win that fight).

Those are the big things that I can think of. I'm sure there's more, but I'm not far enough into marriage I guess to think of them yet.

I need to decide if I'm going to go back to school or not. There are so many options, and that's the problem. I'm 99.5% certain that I do not want a PhD. I'm currently flirting with the idea of getting a master's degree in genetic counseling or forensic DNA analysis. I doubt seriously that I'll stay as a lab tech, because I'm only about $6K away from the top of the pay-scale (and that's with only 3 yrs total experience). I could always get a master's degree in biology I guess. Or I could do something totally different (which would unfortunately involve another bachelor's degree). How can I be 25 years old and not know what I want to do with my life? Geez, I need to get my shit together already lol.

So, I made it through 2008 relatively unscathed. No major work problems, no family deaths (thank God), no broken bones (although we have had an ER visit, but that was for DH. He's fine.). I've picked up a new habit (knitting) and learned more about my body (charting and TTC). I've seen Sadie grow up into a slightly psychotic yet lovable schnauzer, and watched Jake exhibit every single sign of sibling jealousy. I've finally married the guy I've been with since 2003 (and can now jump him guilt-free lol). I've made several new online friends, and I'm thankful for all of them (even the one who doesn't read my blog!). I wonder what 2009 will hold in store for us? Oh, and did I mention that odd numbers make me nervous?

Happy New Year 2009!!!

Random dog pic post

Here's my dog's version of the sideeye; normally he has his head facing down with his eyes upward. This is the closest I have come to capturing it:

The fun thing about schnauzers is that when they sleep, their beards stay in whatever position their head was in. Case in point:

Wanna see a cute pouty face? Here's the one I saw both on the entire car ride to my Mom's house for Christmas, as well as the entire ride back. We still haven't figured out why he was pouty, but he sure was cute while he was doing it. Ignore the sheet-my car has leather seats, so I put a wool blanket covered by a sheet over the seats when the dogs are in the car.

We got a new chair!

When I was a kid, my grandpa had the most comfortable round chair in the world! I honestly did not know that they still made them. I wandered into Pier1 last night, and look what I found:
Too bad this is what the chair has looked like since we got it:

Anyway, I'm really excited about the chair, despite the fact that it is apparently a very expensive doggie bed lol.

The scarf is finished!

I finished my first scarf (the pattern is called My So-Called Scarf) last night! The yarn I used is Paton's SWS in Natural Pink. It's 70% wool, 30% soy. I added a fringe to it, and did not block it. Here is the finished product:

I gave it to my best friend as a birthday/graduation/Christmas present. I'm quite proud to say she loved it!

I'm stalking myself lol

If you look down the page at that thing that shows where the site hits come from, you may notice that almost all of them say Oklahoma City, OK. That would be me looking at my own site lol. I'm stalking myself!

Sunday, December 7, 2008

I am now organized!!

I went to Target tonight (thanks Fred) and bought an It So organization setup for my rapidly growing yarn stash. If I'm going to stay with knitting, I need to make sure I stay organized and can find all of my yarn/needles/patterns. So, here is what I bought:

While I was setting up my organization system, Sadie was otherwise occupied. This is why she is not allowed in the second bedroom alone:

Imagine how much fun she would have if mommy wasn't nearby to make sure Sadie doesn't take a flying leap at the cage?

Jack is singing again!

Jack has been pretty down since Jill died. Even the addition of Will didn't cheer him up. Now he's singing and ruffling his feathers at me again! He's probably just threatening me or challenging me LOL, but choose to see it as love.

Stitch N Bitch

I discovered a local yarn store this weekend, and they have a weekly stitch n bitch on wednesday nights. A Stitch N Bitch is basically a get together for women who want to knit or crochet, and you can talk/bitch about whatever you want. Anyhoo, I LOVED the SNB! I was a little apprehensive about going since I can be painfully shy sometimes and I've never been the coolest person to hang with. Those ladies are so much fun!  They're funny and non-judgmental. One of the girls has BOTB just like me and also knits and cross-stitches. Another girl is engaged to a Native American (and is white like me too), so I think we'll be able to joke about the issues of being in an interracial relationship based on some of the comments she made tonight. I think I may be on my way to making some IRL friends. As a girl with few friends throughout life (but the ones I have are great!), I'd like to have a few more.

I wish the SNB was held every other night instead of once per week. I can hardly wait until next Wednesday. One of the girls goes to another SNB on Saturdays-I might go to that one too! I usually go to my mom's house on the weekends though, so I'm going to have to figure out what to do lol. Haha-I feel like such an adult! I can go out on my own without my shyness taking over! (they say its the little victories...)

Some pics

Unfortunately, we have to go home tomorrow. Here are some pics from our trip to the Grand Canyon today. I took ~400 pics, and a lot of them are really pretty. Too bad my iPhoto program isn't rotating them correctly, so some look sideways. I'll just post a few of the cute, non-sideways ones.

We're here

We finally got to Flagstaff, AZ, at about 6:00. It was snowing when we got here. It took us longer to get here than expected because we decided to stop off at the Petrified National Forest/Painted Desert.

I took over 450 pictures between our hotel in Tucumcari, NM, and the hotel in Flagstaff, AZ. Unfortunately, I am exhausted, so the pics will have to wait until tomorrow. I have to go through them and figure out which ones I want to post-there are soooo many that I like, and I can't make a post with 400 pictures in it.

Goodnight!

We have arrived in New Mexico!

We left OKC at 4:30pm today on our honeymoon trip to the Grand Canyon (nine months after the wedding haha). It got dark pretty quickly, so my photo opportunities were limited. Here is the sunset, somewhere in Western Oklahoma:

I got incredibly excited (due to a mountain dew overdose) when I saw wind generators (still in OK), so I took some pictures of those too:

It was dark by the time we got to Amarillo, so I don't have any pics of Texas or New Mexico right now. We decided to stay overnight in Tucumcari, New Mexico. The only problem we've had on the trip so far is an inability to find ethanol-free gas. My car doesn't really like the gas with EtOH in it, so we avoid it. We had to fill up the blended gas in Amarillo though or risk running out.

I thought our general plan was to switch off driving. Mike drove the entire way here, while I texted and messaged a friend on yahoo messanger (when I had service). One of the radio stations in OKC is giving away an all-expenses-paid trip to watch the OKC Thunder play the Spurs in San Antonio on Dec. 14. You win by texting "thunder" to their number, and whoever texts the most wins. I counted them, and from 4:30 to about 7 I sent over 600 texts to them. Thank god for unlimited messaging! Maybe I'll win.

I'm off to bed now. I will definitely update tomorrow. There should be a boatload of pictures since I'm a camera whore and it'll be daylight. We should get to Williams, AZ, around 4 or 5pm, depending on when we can get out of bed. It's supposed to snow there tonight!!

New additions to my family

On Monday, I bought 2 zebra finches. They are a boy and a girl, and we (not so) creatively named them Jack and Jill. Jack is on the right, and Jill is the blur on the left lol. I'll try to get a better pic of her some other time.

Jack is pretty photogenic, so here's another:

Just a quick note

We are leaving for the Grand Canyon this afternoon. I'm at work right now, but hope to leave early so that I can do important things (like pack lol). We are driving to Tucumcari, NM, and staying the night. I made sure the hotel has free internet, so I'll be able to update anyone who happens to read this. We will leave NM in the morning and should arrive in Williams, AZ, sometime tomorrow afternoon. We're playing it by ear as to whether we go to the GC both tomorrow afternoon and Friday. We intend to drive straight back on Sat (~13hrs).

We didn't take a honeymoon trip after the wedding in Feb, so this is our late honeymoon. Hopefully I won't kill him lol. I'll be sure to take gazillions of pics and will post some of them here. :)

Link for the pattern to the scarf

There have been a few questions about what the stitch is on the scarf. I am a novice knitter and don't know how to explain it. So, I thought I'd provide you guys with a handy-dandy link to the pattern. Here it is:

Quick update on my scarf

It seems like I started knitting that scarf forever ago-here is an update. I decided to give it to my best friend for her birthday. Since her birthday is next week, she'll be getting it for Christmas instead. Here ya go:

I admit I got a little bored with doing the same 2 rows over and over, so I cast on a cabled hobo bag today. I'm only on row 2, but its going well so far.

I was tagged!

I was tagged by Alliebooberz.

Here are the rules:
1. Link to the person who tagged you. (I tried-hope it works!)
2. Share 7 random and/or weird facts about yourself.
3. Tag 7 random people at the end, and include links to their blogs.
4. Let each person know they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. I'm only 4'11" and I've *heard* that being under 5 feet and over age 18 makes me legally a midget.
2. I'm very very gullible, so I think the 2nd part of #1 was just a joke to see if I'd believe it. DH once told me that Dwight Yokum and Rob Zombie were brothers, and I believed him (and repeated it) until about 3 months ago.
3. I am currently in a holding pattern in my career: I work in a shitty biomedical research lab with crazy co-irkers, but grant-funded lab jobs are nearly recession-proof. I'm toying with getting a master's degree in genetic counseling or forensic DNA analysis. Or prostitution.
4. I moved to OK from PA when I was nearly 9. In order to convince me to move away from my friends quietly, my mother told me that we would be living in teepees with indians. And I believed her (see #2 for the reason why).
5. My dad was 30 years older than my mom (they weren't married), and committed suicide when I was 2. He had 2 children from his wife, and I've never had contact with them. I managed to find my half-brother's son on Myspace last year, and I'm very excited! He is the only contact I have with that side of the family because of the obvious break between my half-brother and half-sister and my mom.
6. I like to knit, crochet, and cross-stitch. Sewing is on the to-learn list as well.
7. I love to read, and my favorite tv shows are life, dexter, and biggest loser.
I doubt I found anyone who hasn't been previously tagged (sorry!), but I tag:
